How dangerous is skydiving?
Like in any other extreme sport, there are risks involved in skydiving. However, it has become much safer over the last few decades, with advancements in technology, regulations and training. All our skydiving rigs are fitted with an automatic activation device (AAD). In the unlikely event that an instructor is unable to manually deploy the parachute, the AAD will trigger the reserve parachute automatically based on altitude and speed. Most skydiving accidents these days involve experienced skydivers making poor choices or performing risky maneuvers close to the ground.

It usually takes around 15 or 20 minutes to fly to altitude with the plane. Then the best part, exhilarating freefall for about 60 seconds, followed by a parachute ride that normally takes around 5 to 7 minutes.

Skydiving licence
How old do you have to be to get your skydive licence?
In Australia the legal minimum age to learn to skydive is 16 years old. At Airlie Beach Skydivers we normally require students to be 18, but we can discuss it with parents or guardians if a minor is serious about joining a course to learn to skydive.
What are the requirements to get a skydive licence?
You must complete your AFF course to get your skydive licence to jump solo. In Australia the AFF course consists of 9 stages or levels where students learn the necessary skills to jump unsupervised once the training is completed. You can find more information about how to get your skydiving licence on our learn to skydive page.
Is learning to skydive dangerous?
At Airlie Beach Skydivers we make learning to skydive as safe as possible. Our AFF program includes one full day of ground training, where students need to demonstrate their comprehension and skills prior to being cleared to skydive. All AFF jumps are performed with skydiving instructors assisting students in freefall. Our skydiving instructors at Airlie Beach Skydivers are qualified under the Australian Parachute Federation with thousands of skydives each. All aircraft and gear are regularly maintained to maximise the safety of our operations.
How long does it take to get a skydive licence?
At Airlie Beach Skydivers you can choose to learn at your own pace or our all-inclusive holiday package.
If you decide to learn at your own pace it all starts with the ground course and AFF Stage 1. After that you can continue the rest of stages when you have time, but you shouldn’t leave more than 2 weeks between jumps. There is no need to pay upfront for the whole course.
Our all-inclusive package includes the AFF jumps and 6 additional solo skydives. All gear and training materials are included, as well as accommodation.
